Silica fume, also known as micro silica is a by-product resulting from the production of silicon, ferrosilicon and zirconium oxide. Such products have important market applications ranging from steel manufacture, aluminium, electronics, silicones, glass, ceramics and refractories.

Microsilica, as it name suggests is an ultrafine powder and consists of spherical particles with an average particle diameter of 150 nm – some 100 times smaller than a cement particle. It is normally graded in terms of particle size, purity (% SiO₂) and colour with high purity white silica fume from zirconia production attracting premium prices.

Due to its pozzolanic properties, the main use of microsilica is as a specialist addition for high performance concrete produced for either high strengths or abrasion resistance. The low porosities of such concretes also allow for very good chemical resistance and durability.

Other uses for micro-silica include refractories and specialist fillers in plastics and rubber.
